But they all had something down in writing, and thus were able to follow it.

On the other hand, talking with traders who fail revealed exactly the opposite - they virtually never have a trading plan. Sure, it's somewhere in the back of their minds, and they think they will be able to follow it, but you probably already know how that goes...
